How To Improve Traffic Mobility In Central Texas Using Technology

The biggest challenge in addressing mobility issues in the Central Texas is traffic congestion. As per the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, the only way to solve this situation is to come up with innovative technological solutions.

Following the development in Cedar Park and Leander of 183A Toll Road, and the U.S 290, popularly known as the Manor Expressway between Austin and Manor, the CTRMA now has its sights on the construction of the MoPac Express Lanes. The primary objective of this project is to improve the carrying capacity if the road by implementing variable tolling that will regulate traffic flow.

According to Mike Heiligenstein, the CTRMA wants to create anticipated traffic patterns through the use of advanced technological systems. This means that during rush hour when the other lanes are heavily congested, traffic on the Express Lanes will be mobile.

Owing to its commitment to improving mobility using technology, the CTRMA is embedding fiber lines in some of its projects such as the 183 South project to create smart roads. The organization has partnered with mobile app developer Metropia, to create a traffic app that will give real-time updates and alternative commuter routes. CTRMA has also partnered with Carma, a carpooling app to reduce congestion by motivating commuters to ride-share.

About Mike Heiligenstein

He has operated as the Executive Director of the CTRMA since its formation in 2002. Under his leadership, the CTRMA has developed projects such as the Manor Expressway, the 183A toll road, and the U.S 290 toll road.

Before joining the CTRMA, Mike Heiligenstein served the people of Williamson County for over 23 years in the public sector. He possesses a Bachelor’s degree in Government, a Masters of Government and an MBA from the University of Texas.

He sits on the Texas A&M Transportation Institute’s advisory board and is President of the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association.

The regional body was established in 2002 to design a contemporary transportation network that will meet the diverse transportation needs of the growing Central Texas region. In 1954, Sajwani was born in a conservative middle-class family. His father had a watch and pen store and worked for many hours to support his family while working part-time in Dubai real estate projects. Sajwani’s mother sold fabric, which she purchased from the wholesale market.

Sajwani did not want to join his father’s business, because of his entrepreneurial spirit. His education formed the foundation for his remarkable business success. He began his formal education as an undergraduate in economics and studied at the University of Washington. With his economics degree, he was employed as a contracts manager by GASCO, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. Then he went on to form DAMCO. The rest is history.

Sajwani is not interested in a career in politics. Outside of has work he has devoted himself to philanthropy. Sajwani has donated clothing to underprivileged children across the globe. He has given his funds to clothe 50,000 children. His devotion to children mirrors his commitment to Hussain Sajwani’s four children.
